ChessScribe Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 26, 2026
ChessScribe ("the app", "we", "us") is a mobile app that turns a photo of a handwritten chess scoresheet into digital chess notation (PGN). This policy explains what data the app processes and how. ChessScribe has no user accounts and does not require you to sign in.
1. What the app processes
- Scoresheet photos. When you photograph or select a scoresheet, that image is sent to our server to be transcribed. A scoresheet may contain handwritten information such as player names, date, event, and the moves.
- A random device identifier. The app generates a random ID stored on your device and sends it with each transcription request solely to enforce fair-use rate limits and prevent abuse. It is not linked to your identity, and we do not use it to track you.
We do not collect your name, email, contacts, location, or any account information.
2. How scoresheet photos are used (third-party AI processing)
To read the handwriting, the image is sent to Anthropic, our AI processing provider, via our server. Anthropic processes the image to return the transcribed moves. This processing is subject to Anthropic's Privacy Policy; under Anthropic's API terms, inputs are not used to train their models and are retained only transiently for processing and abuse monitoring. Our own server is stateless and does not store your images or games.
3. Where your games are stored
Your saved games and their scoresheet images are stored only on your device, in the app's private storage. They are not uploaded to us or synced to any cloud. If you uninstall the app, that data is deleted. PGN files you choose to export are saved to the folder you pick using your device's file picker, on your device.
4. What we do NOT do
- No accounts, logins, or passwords.
- No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
- No analytics or third-party tracking SDKs.
- No selling or sharing of personal data with third parties (other than the AI processing in §2).
- No location, contacts, or microphone access.
5. Permissions
- Camera — to photograph a scoresheet (only when you choose to).
- Photos / media — to let you pick an existing scoresheet image, and to save exported PGN files where you choose.
6. Children
ChessScribe is intended for a general audience. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with information, contact us and we will delete it.
7. Security
Images are transmitted to our server and to Anthropic over encrypted HTTPS connections. Because games are stored only on your device, their security also depends on your device's own protections.
8. Your choices
You can delete any saved game from within the app, and uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data. Because there is no account, there is no server-side profile to delete.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy; material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
